The UK Government has unveiled its initiative to introduce hydrogen vehicles into the agriculture and construction sectors. In a newly launched consultation, the government outlines forthcoming regulations aimed at deploying hydrogen-powered machinery such as tractors, diggers, and forklifts to foster environmental sustainability within these industries.
Given the substantial carbon footprint associated with agriculture and construction, the integration of hydrogen vehicles holds promise for significantly mitigating emissions in these vital sectors of the UK economy.
Under the proposed regulations, hydrogen-fueled tractors, diggers, and forklifts will be permitted for use on UK roads. The consultation period will span four weeks, concluding on April 24.
Anthony Browne, the UK’s Technology and Decarbonisation Minister, emphasized the significance of this endeavor, stating, “Enabling hydrogen-powered tractors, diggers, and forklifts to operate on our roads is a pragmatic step toward emission reduction. These measures constitute a pivotal aspect of our strategy to decarbonize transportation in the UK. By fostering the deployment of cutting-edge hydrogen technology, we aim to render it more accessible and ubiquitous, thereby fostering job creation within British companies.”
