Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast is poised to inaugurate its first battery manufacturing facility in India, situated in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, according to three individuals familiar with the situation.
The plant, located in the city of Thoothukudi, will be dedicated to producing batteries for electric vehicles (EVs), distinct from the previously announced plans to assemble vehicles from imported parts.
While VinFast, a competitor of companies like Tesla and China’s BYD, has not officially commented on the matter, an announcement regarding the new plant is anticipated in the coming days.
The company had earlier initiated recruitment for various positions in India, signalling its expansion into the market. The specific details about the investment size and the operational timeline for the VinFast factory in Tamil Nadu remain undisclosed at this time.
