The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has implemented Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) technology on 10 of its buses to enhance defensive driving skills and prevent accidents among its 10,000 drivers.
Equipped with ‘Mobile 8 Connect’ devices, these buses feature vision sensor cameras, Driver Monitoring System (DMS) cameras, GPS units, and eye watches mounted on the front windshield, all interconnected. This pilot project, set to last three months, was inaugurated by Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy.
The vision sensor camera identifies vehicles in front of the bus, continuously monitoring the headway to maintain a safe distance and avoid forward collisions, pedestrian incidents, and speed limit violations. The driver receives audio and visual alerts through an ‘eye watch’ on their right side.
The DMS, an inward-facing camera, observes the driver’s movements, recording video before and after detecting unusual behavior.
To enhance women’s safety, BMTC is installing cameras, panic buttons, and mobile network video recorders (mNVR) in buses. A dedicated SOS button in the Namma BMTC app allows female passengers to report incidents such as disputes, fights, or distress.
Upon pressing the SOS/panic button, an automated alert is sent to the control room, prompting a quick inquiry. If the alert is verified, the control room tracks the vehicle, informs nearby Sarathi vehicles, and takes immediate action.
