Suzuki Motor is reportedly gearing up to begin manufacturing electric vehicles (EVs) in India and subsequently export them to Japan by 2025. This move is part of Suzuki’s strategy to establish India as a global hub for electric car production. Furthermore, Suzuki is contemplating the option of supplying India-manufactured EVs to its partner, Toyota Motor, for the European market, where they would be sold under the Toyota brand. Suzuki has not officially commented on this report, and Toyota, which holds a 4.9% stake in Suzuki, has not provided an immediate response.
The Nikkei newspaper revealed that Suzuki intends to create a new production line at a plant located in the western Indian state of Gujarat, with production slated to commence in the next autumn. The EVs to be exported to Japan will be compact sports utility vehicles priced in the range of 3 million yen ($20,043) to 4 million yen. Additionally, this production line will also manufacture gasoline-powered cars and is expected to have a capacity of 250,000 units per year.
