Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) has introduced its new BharatBenz heavy-duty truck (HDT) lineup, featuring the sophisticated 12-speed Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) known as ‘Torqshift.’ The unveiling represents a notable advancement for the Indian market, highlighted by the initial bulk order of 80 BharatBenz 3532CM mining tippers.
The 12-speed Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) technology, adapted from Mercedes-Benz trucks, has been smoothly incorporated into BharatBenz’s lineup, including models like the 4032T, 5532TS, 5532T, 2832CM, and the premier 3532CM. Aimed at boosting operational efficiency and safety, this advancement provides smooth gear shifts without jerks and quicker transitions, thus improving drivability. Additionally, the Torqshift transmission includes a shift lever built into the steering column, which enhances cabin ergonomics and minimizes noise and heat.
Sreeram Venkateswaran, President and Chief Business Officer, DICV, noted that the Torqshift range is tailored for Indian road conditions and operational requirements, promising a transformative impact on mining and long-haul logistics. The inclusion of AMT in tractor trailers is expected to boost safety and efficiency, particularly as India’s road infrastructure continues to evolve.
The Torqshift transmission is designed for heavy-duty applications, supporting gross combination weights (GCW) from 28 to 55 tonnes. It features a broad range of gear ratios, increased input torque capacity, and the removal of synchromesh components, which improves reliability and lowers maintenance needs. The lightweight alloy housing also enhances the power-to-weight ratio, aiding in the trucks’ exceptional performance and fuel economy. Moreover, longer service intervals help to decrease operating expenses, consistent with DICV’s commitment to reducing the total cost of ownership.
Pradeep Kumar Thimmaiyan, President and Chief Technology Officer, DICV, emphasised that the transmission reduces driving stress and enhances turnaround times while improving fuel efficiency and maintenance intervals. These features make the Torqshift-equipped trucks highly competitive in India’s growing heavy-duty vehicle market.
The BharatBenz Torqshift series places a high emphasis on safety, integrating sophisticated powertrain protection systems managed by software. These systems are designed to reduce the risk of driveline damage under tough conditions. The availability of various driving modes, such as automatic, manual, power, and eco, guarantees flexibility for different operational requirements. Additionally, the seamless shifting mechanism improves both driver comfort and road safety.
