Uber has unveiled a range of new features to improve the safety, fairness, and convenience for its more than one million active drivers in India. In line with the Indian government’s efforts to bolster social security for gig workers, Uber’s updates aim to bolster this initiative, offering incentives for e-Shram registrations that serve as a safety net for gig workers.
Uber has implemented various safety measures, such as the Helmet Verification feature, which mandates two-wheeler drivers to snap a selfie with their helmet on for real-time compliance verification before starting trips. Moreover, Uber now offers female drivers the choice to accept only female passengers, a particularly advantageous option during late-night hours. This initiative enables female drivers to work with greater flexibility and security. Additionally, the company has introduced an audio recording feature that permits drivers to record trip audio when they feel endangered. These recordings are encrypted to protect privacy and can be accessed solely when included in a safety report.
Uber’s latest updates aim to enhance and reward the driving experience. The new Upfront Tipping feature lets riders tip before the trip starts, encouraging drivers to accept rides more quickly. Additionally, Uber has launched Instant Payments, which allow drivers to withdraw their earnings in just five seconds, and up to four times a day. This provides drivers with instant access to their money, a significant improvement over the traditional weekly payout system. Furthermore, Uber’s Mentorship program connects new drivers with seasoned mentors for assistance in adapting to the platform, with support available in various local languages.
The updated Earnings Hub offers a comprehensive breakdown of earnings, detailing the fare’s division between Uber and the drivers’ exact payment. It also shows local government taxes and fully outlines the tips drivers receive. Additionally, the new Deactivation Review Center provides drivers with the ability to examine profile actions, comprehend the reasons, and contest decisions by presenting supporting evidence. Since its launch, more than 5,000 drivers have successfully reinstated their access via valid appeals.
