BorgWarner has broadened its transfer case supply operations with a major North American Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). This expansion involves BorgWarner supplying two varieties of high-performance transfer cases: Electro-Mechanical On-Demand (EMOD) and Electric Shift-on-the-Fly (ESOF), further strengthening a supply relationship with the OEM that has lasted over forty years.
The agreement entails incorporating EMOD and ESOF transfer cases into two of the OEM’s new combustion and hybrid passenger truck platforms, with a third platform also poised to include the ESOF. Production for these vehicles is set to begin in 2027, with the third platform’s start slated for 2028. The EMOD stands out for its rapid response and accurate torque management, which bolster vehicle stability and safety. This is achieved via a motor-driven clutch-apply system that dynamically adjusts torque distribution between the front and rear wheels, based on live vehicle data. While BorgWarner has previously implemented the EMOD transfer case in various platforms for this OEM, this is its inaugural use in a specific passenger truck segment, underscoring its adaptability and solid design.
The ESOF transfer case, crafted for heavy-duty, part-time four-wheel drive trucks, provides an efficient two-wheel drive mode and the ability to switch to four-wheel drive on the go. It boasts lower noise, vibration, and harshness, resulting in improved performance for challenging driving conditions. Currently in its third iteration on the OEM’s passenger truck platforms, the ESOF’s advanced smooth-shifting technology maintains its reputation for reliability and efficiency in tough environments.
Both transfer cases feature BorgWarner’s HY-VO driveline chain, which is optimized for high efficiency and enhanced durability, and are produced using the company’s premium friction materials. The manufacturing will take place at BorgWarner’s facility in Seneca, South Carolina.
