Tesla, the U.S. electric car manufacturer, is set to double its imports of components from India, according to Indian Trade Minister Piyush Goyal. Goyal expressed pride in the increasing significance of Indian auto component suppliers in Tesla’s electric vehicle (EV) supply chain. He shared this update on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) following his visit to Tesla’s manufacturing facility in Fremont, California.
While Goyal was unable to meet with Tesla CEO Elon Musk during his visit, he highlighted Tesla’s commitment to increase its component imports from India. In September, Tesla announced its goal of sourcing components valued between $1.7 billion and $1.9 billion from India for the current year, following $1 billion in component purchases the previous year.
The minister’s U.S. visit aimed to include discussions with Musk about Tesla’s plans to establish a manufacturing facility in India. The discussions were expected to cover manufacturing a $24,000 car in India, increasing component sourcing, and developing a nationwide charging infrastructure, as reported by Reuters last week.
