Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has announced that the Range Rover Electric will have a global unveiling in late this year, with deliveries from 2026. India will be among the priority markets for the luxury EV, immediately after the UK and other European markets.
As per Martin Limpert, Global Managing Director of Range Rover, the EV is in its last test phase. “We are in the final stage of testing the Range Rover Electric, and later this year we will be in a position to share with you launch timelines, but whenever it launches globally, India will be amongst the first markets to receive it,”
More than 62,000 worldwide expressions of interest have been recorded for the Range Rover Electric, with almost 400 from India alone. Limpert pointed out the increasing popularity of the Range Rover brand in India, particularly among celebrities, business leaders, and sportspersons.
“Indian economy is on the rise and there will be an increase in the number of high net-worth individuals from 900,000 now to 1.2 million at the turn of the decade, so there is a large market for us,” he added.
As far as local production goes, JLR is continuing to evaluate the India-UK Free Trade Agreement before making a determination on whether to bring in the vehicle as a Completely Built Unit or produce it as a Completely Knocked Down unit. The local production of Range Rover and Range Rover Sport in India last year resulted in a 18-20% price cut and up to 2.5x increase in sales.
“Since we rolled out these locally-built cars in India, sales of them have gone up 2.5 times,” Limpert said. “Those of the Range Rover by 72%, and of the Range Rover Sport by 42% – FY25 over FY24.”
Though JLR does not have any immediate plans to use India as an export base, it is gearing up its four unique brands – Range Rover, Defender, Discovery, and Jaguar – for the electric future. The Range Rover Electric will be at the forefront of this change, and the Jaguar Type 00, which will be unveiled in India on June 14 and is expected to be launched in 2026.
JLR’s initial EV, the Jaguar I-Pace, which debuted in 2018, was phased out in December 2024 to pave the way for next-generation models. Limpert assured that Jaguar will become an all-electric brand, while the Defender and Discovery will also go electric eventually.
