Passengers travelling on Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) buses can now conveniently pay for their tickets using the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), according to an official announcement on Monday.
In a significant digital upgrade, the state-run transport entity has replaced traditional ticketing machines with Android devices, enabling seamless digital transactions for bus fares. Approximately 34,000 Android ticketing machines have been distributed to conductors, each equipped with a range of digital payment options, as confirmed by an MSRTC spokesperson.
These modernized ticketing machines generate QR codes, allowing passengers to make payments through their UPI applications by scanning the code. This initiative eliminates the need for passengers to carry cash or provide change to conductors during their journey.
With a fleet of around 15,000 buses, the MSRTC stands as one of the largest state-run road transport bodies in India. On a daily basis, the corporation’s buses cater to over 60 lakh passengers across the state. This move towards digital payment methods not only enhances the efficiency of the ticketing process but also contributes to a more cashless and convenient travel experience for commuters.
