MG Motor is stepping up its international electric vehicle lineup, and its new move indicates a serious foray into the premium mid-size electric SUV segment. The automaker has made a fresh design patent application in Australia, indicating a dramatic new product that is set to take on established competitors such as the Tesla Model Y, Kia EV5, and BYD Sealion 7.
New MG Electric SUV Design Emerges
SAIC Motor, the parent company of MG, filed a new design patent for a future electric SUV, and judging by the leaked patent images, it appears to be a larger iteration of the current MG S5. The model may have the S6 or S7 badge when it goes into production eventually.
Design-wise, the car resembles the MG S5 but looks more premium and larger in size. It has a strong front fascia with a large MG badge, angular LED headlamps, signature DRL features, and well-defined bumper creases that highlight the shut-off grille. From the side, the SUV has a svelte profile, with classic door handles, chunky alloy wheels, spacious windows, and long rear doors that add to its utility. At the rear, it features linked wrap-around LED tail lamps, a dynamic rear bumper, an integrated rear wiper, and a roof spoiler. The presence of fake roof rails suggests the model’s premium tag.
What Lies Ahead?
As per reports, this new SUV will not be a rebranded version of SAIC’s other brands but an entirely new MG design. It is expected to be developed on the Modular Scalable Platform (MSP)—the same electric vehicle architecture used in vehicles such as the MG4 hatchback and the Cyberster sports car and others..
Although formal interior photos and powertrain details remain a secret, this new electric SUV is anticipated to be a mid-size premium model. Upon release, it will directly compete with electric SUVs like the Tesla Model Y, BYD Sealion 7, Kia EV5, and Volkswagen ID.4 There has been no confirmation on the launch in India yet. Still, given the escalating EV market in the nation and presence of similar competition such as the BYD Sealion 7, bringing a model such as this to India can be a strategic decision for MG.
