A recent report by Juniper Research, a recognized authority in IoT market analysis, reveals that smart traffic management systems could reduce global CO2 emissions by as much as 923 million metric tons (MMT) by the end of the decade.
This projected figure marks a dramatic 151% rise from the 368 MMT in emissions savings estimated for 2025. The 2030 savings would represent approximately 1.5% of the world’s total carbon emissions for that year.
The full findings are detailed in the newly released report Smart Traffic Management Market 2025-2030. A complimentary sample is also available for download.
Cybersecurity a Growing Priority
Juniper Research emphasizes that to unlock these environmental benefits, cybersecurity must evolve alongside the deployment of smart traffic systems. As more sensors are installed and greater volumes of data are produced, the need for scalable security is becoming increasingly critical.
Technologies tailored for secure handling of real-time, high-volume data environments — including data minimization and federated learning — are being highlighted as particularly effective. These innovations allow for the continuous processing of traffic information without exposing personal data.
The study also notes that solutions offering real-time data anonymization will be especially advantageous for vendors looking to thrive in a rapidly expanding market — forecasted to grow from $14.8 billion in 2025 to $32.7 billion by 2030. By adopting such privacy-preserving technologies, companies can build greater public confidence and reduce the likelihood of security breaches.
Michelle Joynson, the research author, commented, “As smart traffic management solutions continue to collect valuable personal data to optimise traffic flows, the threat of cyber-attacks is increasing. Smart traffic vendors must deploy robust security measures to ensure system reliability, continually enabling optimised traffic flows; leading to significant emission reductions and cost savings.”
