Google Maps is introducing six new features in India to enhance user experience and encourage sustainable travel. The updates, based on artificial intelligence and local partnerships, are set to roll out this week and address prevalent commuting challenges in the country. One key feature is the narrow road avoidance system. Google has developed an AI model to estimate road widths using satellite imagery, Street View, and other data. This system helps four-wheelers avoid narrow roads, making driving less stressful and improving safety for all road users. Clear callouts will also alert drivers to narrow sections, allowing them to proceed cautiously or choose alternative routes. Additionally, Google Maps will now highlight flyovers along recommended routes in 40 cities to help drivers navigate elevated roadways. For electric vehicle (EV) users, over 8,000 charging stations will be integrated, including two-wheeler chargers, with real-time availability and filter options. The update also includes a new metro ticket booking option in Kochi and Chennai, enabling passengers to purchase tickets directly through Google Maps. Lastly, reporting road incidents will be easier with improved support for user-generated content on Android, iOS, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
